eyeWonder: GREATful

I'm up at 2:00am writing a paper, and here's my sidetrack thought:

Am I the only one who thinks that it's rather strange that "great" is spelled g-r-e-a-t, yet grateful is spelled g-r-a-t-e(ful)?

Any rational explanations for this?
Alright, alright. I'm off to finish this paper.
